Can patients with gum disease receive implant treatment?

Gum disease does not always mean that implant treatment is impossible. Aggressive dental care, including tooth brushing instructions, removal of tartar (dental calculus), and treatment of gum disease, may allow the patient to undergo implant treatment.

The results of the follow-up study by Dr. Lang showed success rates of implant treatment in patients with and without gum disease of 90.5 % and 96.5%, respectively. This suggests that gum disease is associated with a significant risk of implant failure.

In addition, the development of inflammation after implant treatment severely affects the alveolar bone rather than the natural tooth. It is important to treat gum disease and continue postoperative care in such cases.
